FOUNDER

More about Andrew

Andrew’s married with two kids and lives in Cape Town. Australian by birth, Andrew has called South Africa home for 20 years after stints living/working in the USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Andrew lives in the Cape for the incredible lifestyle and access to a wide variety of nature based activities like surfing, sup’ing, diving, hiking, trail running and camping.

Highlights of Andrew’s work “pre-Blue” include producing sell-out events, tv broadcasts and FIFA World Cup campaigns through to leading successful business acquisitions, corporate fundraisers and building business partnerships where everyone wins.

Andrew understands the daily grind that founders face.  He’s had his fair share of winning but his best lessons have come from overcoming challenges and setbacks.

Andrew’s a naturally persuasive communicator, mission-driven and at his best when conceptualising new ideas and getting diverse audiences on-board and focussed towards a shared goal.

Andrew’s expertise and experience coupled with my expansive mindset make him a compelling leader within organisations with a clearly defined purpose and ambition to grow.

THINGS THAT MATTER TO ME

Authenticity. Mindset. Humour. Curiosity. Nature. 8 R's. Think BIG.

It’s always better to just be yourself. All the other jobs are taken!

If you think you can or you think you can’t…you’re probably right!

A well timed quip is like opening a window – it’s a breath of fresh air to diffuse tension.

It’s better to be interested vs interesting. Every day is a school day!

I believe in the powerful connection and healing that comes from nature.

Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink, Repair, Regenerate and Respect. Mindful Consumerism.

Be ambitious. REALLY ambitious! Dream big but believe BIGGER!

ORIGINS

Why the Salamander?

Both sides of my family (Douglas and McFarlane) came from Scotland to farm in South Australia in the mid 1800’s.
The Salamander features strongly within the Douglas family crest and is meant to symbolise resilience and regeneration.
Mythologically, Salamanders were believed to be able to survive fire and emerge unharmed – representing the idea of enduring adversity and emerging stronger.
Contrary to this, and ironically given The Salamander Company’s revised modus operandi, the prevalence of salamanders in natural habitats are seen as strong indicators of environmental health. Their fragile nature, due to permeable skin and habitat sensitivity, makes them vulnerable to pollution and climate change.
